All of my games do. You read that right. All of them.

It doesn't matter whether I'm playing Star Trek, D&D (Ha! Fat chance of that…), Ars Magica, Champions, Toon, or Paranoia. Experience Points, and other PC advancement rewards, are not are based on what you killed, and certainly not on what you took or found.

It takes a little getting used to for some players, but then again, I don't want the kind of player at my table that can't grok with it.
Adam Dicksteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04840144928096089178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465863144787683153.post-15196294250109737972014-07-13T04:42:44.257-04:002014-07-13T04:42:44.257-04:00One of the players in my group -- a chap with a st...One of the players in my group -- a chap with a strong mathematical mind who tends to enjoy games with intricate mechanics -- announced yesterday while we were playing a few rounds of Smash Up -- great fun but that's irrelevant -- that he's bored of rpgs where character advancement is tied to combat aptitude. He said that he found it too easy to "game the system" in these cases and suck out all the challenge. As we've been playing Pathfinder and other D&D variants for years this has come as a bit of a shock.

All of which means that my summer project this year is researching games where character growth is not associated with killing things and taking their stuff. Fate is a possibility and I'm going to run a session of Lady Blackbird at some point but other than that I've got to get my thinking cap on!thekelvingreenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01928260185408072124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465863144787683153.post-54810488784316916512014-07-13T00:50:53.769-04:002014-07-13T00:50:53.769-04:00Wait...pants?
