I understand you. If I had to point what made me think Stars Without Number wasn't for us, that would be that PCs looked, at first sight, somewhat boring. And, if you were looking for aliens, it isn't the game.

As for Free Spacer, the preview reminded me of Worlds in Peril and other Powered by Apocalypse in a very negative way: they manage to explain fantastically imaginative mechanics in the most dull, unispiring way conceivable. But it also seems to contain a lot of what makes those games interesting (I tried two of them I didn't like how they play, but they should be mandatory reading for GMs).Miguel de Rojashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15762364029464337239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465863144787683153.post-66537917206224569892018-09-16T23:13:22.121-04:002018-09-16T23:13:22.121-04:00I tried Stars Without Number when it first came ou...I tried Stars Without Number when it first came out and while I like some of its ideas I found it didn't really do what I wanted it to do.

It's too Old School for the New School Gamer in me, too modern in a lot of ways to really feel like an Old School SF RPG, and too crunchy for those (like myself) who prefer things a bit simpler and faster moving. It sort of works on a lot of levels and sort of doesn't for me on others.

Hard to put a finger on it exactly but if I think to myself, "OK, you could run this Space Adventure games using Stars Without Number, or you could use Traveller, Star Frontiers, Space Opera, or InSpace (a variant on InSpecters). Which do you choose?"

The choice would come down to the type of game I want to run but Stars Without Number just isn't as good an option for my as the others.

Now, Free Spacer on the other hand...looking good. I did, and I found that it is very well constructed and has a ton of useful material even for other games. All this, despite its hardcore Old School DNA, which is not for all tastes (indeed, I am not sure it is for MY taste).Miguel de Rojashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15762364029464337239noreply@blogger.com
