It's like Cheers meets the Cantina in Mos Eisley.

You are so right in your statement. One of the biggest mistakes modern games, and game conventions make (actually fandom conventions in general) is to assume because you are a fan, you have been there before or just know what's what instinctively.

We're geeks, and this is a geek positive event, but we're not birds building a nest. It's not encoded in our DNA. Explain it to the newcomers. Invite them in so it feels like home.

Stan Lee was quoted as saying, "Every comic book is somebody's first comic book". That's true for RPGs and conventions as well.Adam Dicksteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04840144928096089178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465863144787683153.post-17591873463868039962015-08-06T22:12:31.737-04:002015-08-06T22:12:31.737-04:00Not a mystery fan then? One look at their website told me nuthin' about what to really expect or what it was like.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08744387076248475114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465863144787683153.post-10039308633777012882015-08-06T20:37:23.122-04:002015-08-06T20:37:23.122-04:00It was indeed my direct, if ineloquent, mystery fr...It was indeed my direct, if ineloquent, mystery friend.Adam Dicksteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04840144928096089178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465863144787683153.post-76393693167348794762015-08-06T20:11:45.550-04:002015-08-06T20:11:45.550-04:00RoughRoughUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08744387076248475114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465863144787683153.post-5714507021759592762015-08-06T15:35:53.138-04:002015-08-06T15:35:53.138-04:00I have avoided conventions for years because my so...I have avoided conventions for years because my social anxiety always puts me off but I went to Dragonmeet in London in December and I had great fun, even if I didn't make the most of it. The thing I liked most was meeting people that I knew online for the first time in the flesh. I suspect something on the scale of GenCon would be too much for me!thekelvingreenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01928260185408072124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2465863144787683153.post-12190419359888165322015-08-06T13:12:28.125-04:002015-08-06T13:12:28.125-04:00I am sorry the games that Will attended were less ...I am sorry the games that Will attended were less fun than he deserved. I strive for a welcoming table and a fun experience for all when I GM at GenCon (or anywhere else) and I try my best to have the preparation and focus to deliver that. Sometimes things do not go as smoothly as I would like, but I learn from problems and improve the games for the future.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
