RPGaDay Chellenge 2016 - Day 8
Hmmm...my preference, eh? Well, it's changed a little over the years.
Hardcover will always be my favorite aesthetically. They look good, they feel good in your hand, and they (usually) read well. I used to also love the smell of old hardcover RPGs.
Softcover though...A lot of the games I really like are in softcover. A lot of the great indie games of the past five years, or so are in this format. When you think about it, all the games of the 70's and 80's that came in boxed sets were technically softcovers as well, right? The books that came inside the boxes I mean. Star Trek by FASA, Traveller, Ghostbusters by West End Games - all softcovers.
Digital...Well, I used to dislike digital, finding it difficult to read from a computer screen for long periods of time. I eventually adapted (blogging probably helped), and now I find PDFs of be extremely useful for quite reference.
So...my preference is to have what works. All these formats work for different reasons, and I don't know that I have a favorite anymore.
Still...I love seeing hardcovers on my shelf.

Yep, they left out "boxed set" as a preference choice. A whole lot of my favorite games started out as boxed sets - D&D, Gamma World, Star Trek, Marvel, DC - that's a pretty strong list.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting to the point where my preferred format for monster books and published adventures is "digital" as I can print what I need and they're usually less expensive. That said, I often end up with a hard copy of some kind just to have it on the shelf.
