Recent Discovery

On the heels of the new Star Trek RPG news comes a teaser for the new CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery

Here is the teaser:

I know it's already a somewhat divisive design, but I personally like it.

Inspired by, if not actively based on, the Ralph McQuarrie design for the Enterprise of the shelved Star Trek: Phase II television series, I like that is looks like a Starfleet ship and yet unlike any we've seen before.

It's like the contract for the production of this vessel went to different shipbuilders than the guys who usually win the naval contracts.

I also love the retro-Sci-Fi asteroid shipyard/spacedock. So cool.

I'm getting the Star Trek gaming bug again in spite of myself.

It's only a matter of time...

  1. Not sure ... that animation looks like videogame level work - and not a 2016 video game. The Axanar stuff looked better to me. I'm fine with exploring new designs and I think it looks like something that would have fit into the FASA-Trek fleet for sure. I'll still give it a chance but I hope this is "early work" that gets a lot better by the time the show arrives.

    1. I will agree that Axanar looked much better, but bare in mind this teaser may be early test footage (it reminds me of test footage I've seen in the past for other projects).

I wouldn't be surprised if the final product no only looks better, but that the final ship design will be a bit different as well.

  2. I quite like the design too; I know it's just a teaser and doesn't tell us much -- if anything -- about what the programme will be like, but I'm optimistic.

  3. I like the design, it looks good visually to me. I am also very excited about the new series though still confused as to why we have not seen a Starfleet Academy show by now.

  4. When is this set? Did they say yet? The design almost has a Cardassian look.

    1. There is very little concrete information on the series except that the ship is the USS Discovery, NCC-1031, and that the show will be less episodic, and more serial oriented.

Rumors I've heard, and read (supported by the low hull number) indicate it is set after ST: Enterprise, but before the Original Series.

  5. Too bad it's on a subscription service, so I won't be watching it. I do admit that the Discovery's low registration number (NCC-1031) is intriguing. Makes me think that it might be another pre-TOS.

    1. I was pretty much dead set against watching it also, as I do not like the idea of their subscription service (it would've made more sense to put it on Netflix).

Now seeing the ship, I'm curious. I like what I've seen. Not enough to say I'm signing up for CBS All Access, but leaving the door open for them to impress me and change my mind.
