I'm so excited I dressed for the occasion...
Today, January 4th, 2024, is and shall forever be the release date of the Anime series Delicious in Dungeon on both Japanese TV and Netflix in the USA. (Did it air today in your country? If so, where? If not, when? Let us know!).
I am a big fan and want to spread the word of this awesome story so we can get the entire Manga - 14 volumes as of this post - adapted to animation. If you watch it and like it, spread the word! Humorous, heart felt, action and adventure in a Dungeons and Dragons type setting with awesome world-building. Just thinking about what's in store for newcomers to the series is making me hungry.
Delicious in Dungeon (or Dungeon Meshi/Dungeon Meal in Japan) is my favorite Manga of the last...I don't know...maybe decade or more. I first learned about it when they were on Volume 3 or 4 I think but I started back with one and now own all the English translates editions from Yen Press. In addition to the regular Manga I own the Adventurer's Bible, a guide to the characters and world.
I've already addressed the title on the blog several times before though I'm not sure if I've ever talked about at length about the series itself. I know I've mentioned how much I like it, how it keeps inspiring me to run an Anime/Manga influenced Medieval Fantasy, yet I don't think I've gone into great detail about the world, monsters, characters, and so forth. Honestly, I think I'll hold off a little while longer as I want everyone to watch the Anime and get to know the series a little better before I discuss it and potentially ruin anything.
I will say that watching the first episode has reminded me how much I adore the setting here and how it's once again made me interested in a Dungeon Meshi-esque TPG campaign. Gah! This series is frustratingly loveable.
Expect more discussion about Anime/Manga style Western Fantasy very soon.
Please give the show a watch and let me know what you think.

*Enjoy! The Japanese equivalent of Bon Appétit.
Oh my god, thank you! I probably wouldn't have watched this first episode if not for your proselytising.
ReplyDeleteI love this show!
It's very Lodoss War (my definitive D&D cartoon, no matter how much I love the actual D&D cartoon) , but with cooking and a very matter-of-fact approach to the concept of a megadungeon.
So excited now to see where Delicious in Dungeon goes...
If the Anime remains faithful to the Manga (and I assume it will), you ain't seen nothing yet.
DeleteThis is the only D&D style Dungeon/Megadungeon I've seen in 40 years that has truly interested me. There is a reason it is the way it is. There are logical follow throughs of the concepts introduced. The terrain and types of encounters different from each other.
Add in the heroism and humor of the characters and yeah, this is my jam as far as Fantasy goes.
I love this manga. I loved hearing the character's voices. My favorite bit of the first episode was when the narrator posed the question of where the monsters were coming from. Looking forward to that question's unfolding answer in an animated format is so exciting!
