The Month of Living Again

February is over and March is here, 'The Month of Living Again'.

March represents, from a certain perspective, the road to renewal following the cold, dark months of Winter. The phrase itself embodies the promise of Spring and the idea that rebirth and a fresh start are on the horizon.

What? It's the 11th already?!? F*@%!

*sigh*

I can't pinpoint the exact reason why but I am struggling to blog lately. I have a ton of thoughts and ideas on a variety of subjects but I am not enthusiastic about any of them to put them to post

About the only gaming subject I am actively excited about is my take on the Smurfs RPG. The thing is, I am not so blinded by my personal preferences that I don't realize how niche this game is. While it may be the only thing I want to write about, I know very few of you out there have any interest in reading about it*.

That's fine. More for me.

Where does that leave the blog though?

Damned if I know. More likely then not you're gonna see some Smurf posts anyway as that's just what's on my mind. Maybe accompanied by the occasional usual unusual mix of Star Trek,  Ghostbusters, Supers, and Japanese TRPGs. Just know it's going to continue to be irregular for a while until I can sort out whatever this tabletop RPG malaise is that I'm experiencing.

Fingers crossed that it passes quickly.

  1. I, for one, am very interested in what you have to say about the Smurfs RPG. I am neither a fan nor a detractor of Smurfs in general, but I am fascinated by the particulars of how it was adapted to role-playing, how it plays at the table, and what rules and perspectives can be borrowed for other RPGs.

    1. Thanks Gordon, I appreciate the interest and outlook.

Honestly, the one thing I keep saying about the Smurfs RPG that I feel continues to be true is that it didn't need to be as well done as it is.

The game will mostly be run and played by parents who were kids when the comics and cartoons were in the pop culture zeitgiest of the 1980s for the children of said parents. They could have gotten away with an even simpler, less 'textured' game and everyone interesting in getting it would still have enjoyed it.

Instead, there is an actual sink-your-teeth-into-it game here. One that could easily be adapted to a serious Medieval Fantasy game for example. We played it just last night and remarked how one mechanic in particular would have a bigger impact in long term play, not really showcasing what it can do in just the occasional one-shot. That's kind of awesome for a game of this kind.

Thank you again for the encouragement. Definitely more little blue people and mushroom houses on the way!

  2. I came here to pretty much say what Gordon said. I'm here for whatever system you write about as you always bring an interesting perspective to your subject matter: Smurfs, supers, spectres whatever...

  3. Hey Adam, I'll echo what the others have said in that I'm interested in reading about whatever you want to explore, including (in some ways especially!) the Smurfs. I realize it's easy to say as someone who has never had a large readership on my own blog (and who doesn't commit himself to the craft like you do when you post), BUT the beauty of the personal blog is that it can be about whatever tf you feel like taking the time to write about, so I say embrace that!
