Muppet Monster Mash

The Muppets wouldn't be The Muppets without Monsters.

While I intend to take a deeper look at what the Muppet Monster is next week, I do think it interesting to note what a widely varied creature it is. It can be cute and cuddly like Elmo, massive and slightly disturbing like the Gorgon Heap or a little of both as evidenced by the full-bodied Muppet called Thog.

I'm surprised we haven't seen an all Monster production.

I imagine there is a world where only Muppet Monsters live, not unlike what we saw in the Pixar film Monsters, Inc. but considerably more odd and creepy. Imagine a place where Monsters take the bus, go to work, do a big presentation and get eaten by the boss if the client doesn't like it.

What are Monster Sports like? What about Monster Police and Firefighters? Parody versions of TV shows would exist and could allow for shows within the show for this type of world just as Pigs in Space or Bear on Patrol are for The Muppet Show.

A Muppet variant of Monsters! Monsters!, the Tunnels & Trolls spin-off where you play the Monsters defending your dungeon from the threat of intruding adventurers would be awesome!

As you ponder that for a while, here's a visual homage to the Muppet Monster - Beasts, Bogies, Boogies and all the rest by artist Ivan Guerrero...

...but wait, it gets better...

Muppet Quotes

Harvey Korman [as Maurice the Magnificent]: Speak. Speak you demon, SPEAK!
Thog: [gulps] I hardly know where to begin.

Zero Mostel: I am not in my dressing room, eating! I am in my dressing room, being eaten!

Here's A Muppet News Flash!

I actually have a lot more to say on the subject of Muppet Monsters but I want to save some of it for other posts that will appear later this week and next.

The idea of a fully developed 'Monster World' seems to be something original enough that no such idea appears anywhere on the internet in regards to previous Muppet projects. I checked the Muppet Wiki and none of the Unfinished Projects mentioned are similar. This strikes me as strange not only because I think the idea has merit but I could've sworn I'd heard it suggested or mentioned at one point in the 90's. If anyone else has heard of this and can direct me to some evidence or notes on it it would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Wow. I had no idea there were so many muppet monsters. Clearly my Muppet knowledge isn't what it should be.

  2. To be fair their not all Monsters in the pick but the vast majority are.

Doesn't the list look sort of like a Random Chart? Wheels are turning...
